Producing Heavy Conversations With Care

Podcasting often asks people to talk about the hardest moments of their lives, and producers are usually the ones holding that weight.

I’ve produced several podcasts about “heavy” stuff, including death, grief, loss, and other difficult topics. This session is about the real, behind-the-scenes choices producers make before recording, during vulnerable conversations, and in the edit, where a lot of harm (or care) can actually happen.

This isn’t therapy, and it’s not about getting it perfect. It’s a practical, producer-focused conversation with examples and case studies about how to work with heavy stories responsibly, how to care for guests without overstepping, and how to protect yourself while doing emotionally demanding work.

Key Takeaways

  • What “trauma-informed” actually means in podcast production
  • How to prepare guests for vulnerable conversations
  • How to protect yourself as a producer
  • What care looks like after the mic is off
  • How editing choices can either protect or expose people
  • Presenters:
  • Jasmine Rach
